Penfolds Grange 1996
Vibrant plum red; a fusion of cinnamon and mixed spices with blackcurrant, blueberry and boysenberry fruit; savoury, underlying aromas of earth, cold tea and roast chestnuts plus barrel-ferment richness. Archetypal young Grange with concentration, balance and powerful berry fruit flavours, with blueberry at the core. Tight and structured, although the thick ripe tannins are shrouded beneath a veil of opulent fruit. Excellent length and persistence of flavour and masterful handling of oak. A very fine Grange that will confidently sit alongside the great 1990.

Robert Parker Review: "This dark purple-colored wine exhibits notes of sweet plum, blackberry, and cassis intermixed with some licorice, chocolate, and espresso. It is a blend of 94% Shiraz and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon that tips the scales at 14+% alcohol. The wine is layered, unctuously textured, full-bodied with tremendous intensity, moderately high tannin, and a 40-second finish. The wine needs a good 4-5 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025. This Grange should ultimately merit a higher score when it is closer to its plateau of drinkability.

Penfolds Grange 1979
Medium red/purple; complex, developing aromas with plenty of soft, slightly lifted, tobacco/berry/gamey fruit. Highly concentrated with rich cedar/blackberry fruit, massive, firm, dry tannins and long flavourful finish. Tannins are too much at the fore at the moment, but could soften out over time.
