Penfolds Grange 1993
Dense plum red merging to brick red on rims; Intense blackcurrant and plum with malt, fig and liquorice aromas that leap from the glass. This has all the characters of a classic Grange.
What is promised on the nose is delivered on the palate - a powerful, concentrated, opulent wine. Layers of Shiraz fruit and first class oak manifest themselves into a seemingly endless variety of flavours - deep plum liquorice, black olive, chocolate, cedar, coffee, etc. all compressed into a silken, round mouth feel. Forceful, ripe tannins are balanced by sheer weight of fruit. It is hard to believe that 100% new American oak was used - the intensity of fruit has all but soaked it up.

Penfolds Grange 1997
A deep, crimson red with a dense ruby core;
Immediately engaging, with wafts of nutmeg and ginger amongst notes of blueberry and blackcurrent and a background of well-seasoned savoury oak. the fruit gains in the glass with aeration, when more subtle perfumes and chestnut complexities emerge. Already showing excellent balance within the frame of a beautifully interwoven mesh of dark plum and blackberry fruits with fig and liquorice. Complex fruit and spice flavours sit against a finely focused backdrop of firm but rounded tannins, balancing acidity and seductively perfectly integrated, smoky oak. The palate has wonderful length, with a tightly structure, tannic finish indicative of the calibre of this fine wine, still very much in its youth.
